Adults baffled as they can’t sold 11-year-old’s ‘brainteaser’ homework problem

Parents have been left scratching their heads over an 11-year-old’s homework assignment that they claim looks like an ‘error’. After spending hours trying to figure it out, a man has shared an image of his nephew’s activity sheet on social media in search of an answer.

It asks students to “figure out what these tricky brainteasers are trying to say” before presenting them with a mishmash of letters to solve. The Reddit user said: “OK does the second brainteaser down on the left really say what I think it does? My 11-year-old nephew’s activity sheet. As far as I can tell that one says Tiananmen Square seems a bit [of] a weird thing in a kids work sheet homework compared to the other solutions!”

In 1989, Chinese troops occupied Tiananmen Square in response to a student-led demonstration in the area. The June Fourth Incident, also known as the Tiananmen Square massacre, saw soldiers assaulting protesters, resulting in 241 total deaths between them, according to the Chinese government. However, the Red Cross estimates this number to be closer to 2,600.

Commenting on the homework sheet, one user said: “I feel like it’s [Tiananmen] square but I feel like that wouldn’t be an answer in these kinds of puzzles.” Another user added: “My guess would have been the same as yours. Could always tell them it’s teenage mutant ninja turtles (TeeNage Mutant Ninja Two-to) Yes that’s a stretch.”

A third user said: “How many 11 year olds know these phrases? I have an issue with this entire assignment. Where do send my complaints?” One more user added: “No reason to lie to them, Tiananmen Square is just a place in China. The Tiananmen Square massacre doesn’t have to be mentioned at all. It’s like keeping Mandalay Bay hotel a secret just because something bad happened there. They’re separate.”

In response to their comments, the shocked uncle said: “I would say obscure is an understatement, given that it is an 11-year-old’s homework and in a sheet that otherwise has phrases/tv shows and otherwise non-historical answers. And I can almost guarantee that Tiananmen Square will not yet have been covered in his school, meaning coming to the answer on his own would be nothing short of miraculous!”

While another user tried to help further by guessing all of the answers on the worksheet, adding: “Unfinished business. Ace in the Hole. [Tiananmen] Square. Beady Little Eyes. Irregular Heartbeat. An Eye for an Eye. Little House on the Prairie.” Impressed by confused, a final user questioned: “What kid today is going to know Little House on the Prairie?”
