Along with Canada, Trump imposes new tariffs on Mexico and China

U.S. President Donald Trump signed new tariff orders on Mexico and China on Saturday, hours after CBC News learned he would follow through on his promise to levy Canada.

Trump is declaring an economic emergency to put duties of 10 per cent on all imports from China and 25 per cent on imports from Mexico.

The White House said Trump’s order also includes a mechanism to escalate the rates if the countries retaliate against the United States, as they have threatened.

Trump says the tariffs are to force the countries to do more to stop the flow of fentanyl into the U.S., but they also dovetail with his embrace of protectionist measures to boost domestic manufacturing and as a potential source of revenue for the federal government.

The White House also confirmed reporting by CBC News that Trump is imposing 25 per cent duties on virtually all goods from Canada, with the exception of a 10 per cent rate on Canadian oil.
