Amazon Prime subscribers are flocking to watch what’s being hailed as ‘one of the most underrated and underappreciated dark fantasies ever made’ available on the platform.
The film in question is Solomon Kane, which first hit UK cinemas in 2010 and US screens in 2012. It seems the title is now finding a new audience who feel it didn’t receive the recognition it deserved upon its initial release. As such, it’s currently one of the most viewed titles on the streaming service in the UK. It is based on a character from the mind of pulp fiction writer Robert E. Howard, also known for creating Conan the Barbarian.
Solomon Kane was intended to serve as an origin story for the character, shedding light on how he became the figure depicted in the original tales. The hope was for it to kickstart a trilogy, but legal issues delaying its US release led to disappointing box office returns.
In the film, Solomon Kane is portrayed as a ruthless mercenary wreaking havoc in the name of England. However, after a particularly violent mission, he’s visited by the Devil’s reaper, sent to claim his soul, reports Surrey Live.
This prompts Kane to renounce violence in a bid for redemption. But as he embarks on this spiritual journey, he faces a dilemma: will he risk his soul by returning to his deadly ways for a greater cause? Film fans who’ve stumbled upon Solomon Kane again are arguing that it’s not getting the recognition it deserves within its genre. A fan took to Rotten Tomatoes, where the film boasts a respectable 70% rating, to express their views.
They enthused: “One of the most underrated and underappreciated dark fantasy films ever made; with an outstanding performance from James Purefoy, beautiful cinematography, an epic score, tight direction and great visuals for a limited theatre film on a middling budget.”
Another admirer echoed the praise for lead actor Purefoy, who later appeared in Netflix hits Sex Education and The Recruit. Their comment read: “Strong performance by James as Solomon Kane, solid musical score, well paced, good plot twist and a startling revelation near its climax. Solomon Kane is a greatly adapted work of Robert E. Howard’s creation, aged superbly well, and will stand the test of time.”
Adding to the chorus, another fan declared: “This is one of my favourite movies, I enjoyed the atmosphere and action. Truly depicts a dark time and dark world, in which a sliver of hope remains. I recommend watching this movie. It’s unique in its own way. Loved the actor that played Kane.”
Another viewer who has recently discovered the film, shared: “Just found this to watch and have to say. I wish I’d seen it sooner. Purefoy was great! He swashbuckles his way through a landscape that has that delightfully creepy vibe that makes you feel as if magic is afoot at all times.”
They went on to say: “The characters were nicely done, the costumes were fantastic and the stunts were great. I liked the story and followed it with interest. A fun movie, well worth watching. Sadly, it doesn’t look as if the trilogy will happen. I wish it would though. In a time of remakes, and plodding clod hoppers of tentpoles, a good old sword and sorcery film with good acting and great characters is needed.”
Solomon Kane is streaming on Amazon Prime.
