BAFTAs fans left reeling as they issue same complaints minutes into show

Film fans tuning in to coverage of the 2025 EE BAFTAs were left furious. Many were disgruntled that the results had already been shared before the show even hit screens.

A string of A-List stars came to London to cheer on the best performances and productions from the past year of cinema – with religious drama Conclave the movie of the night to beat as it was nominated in an astonishing 12 BAFTA award categories. Controversial musical Emilia Pérez was close behind with 11 nominations, and gritty drama The Brutalist was the third most nominated with nine.

But many fans were livid that the results of winners had already been leaked online long before the show even started airing on BBC One. While the ceremony started screening at 7pm on Sunday night, the actual awards had started more than an hour before.

As a result, viewers already knew who was going to take the awards – spoiling the element of surprise while watching the show. Fans flooded X to complain – with some saying they had struggled to avoid spoilers before the highlights show started airing.

One wrote on X: “Accidentally opened this app so now I basically got spoiled for the baftas.” And another wrote: “I’m getting off twitter bc the baftas is getting spoiled hahahah sorry that sounds so ridiculous.” While others revealed they had purposely swerved the online world to try to keep the spoilers at bay – with one writing: “Right I’ve avoided seeing any spoilers on socials so far, so let’s sit down and enjoy this year’s #Baftas. Another wonderful year of cinema.”

David Tennant was back to host the 2025 ceremony – marking his second consecutive year as the award show presenter. The Scottish actor, best known for his role in Doctor Who shared his excitement about returning for another year when he was announced as the 2025 host earlier in the year. He described his first experience hosting as “so much fun” and expressed his joy at being part of the prestigious event once again.

He said: “It’s a lark! The night went past in a bit of a blur last year, but it was so much fun. It feels like a real privilege to be part of it, and to get another crack at something so exciting is a real joy.” He added: “I also didn’t want anyone to think I hadn’t been asked back, so I thought I’d better say yes! Luckily this is not what I do for my day job – if it all goes wrong I’ll just go back to pretending to be other people.”

While Conclave, Emilia Pérez and The Brutalist were the most nominated films of the night, there were plenty of other big screen features that fans were excited to see celebrated. Hit musical Wicked was nominated for seven awards – with stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande both drawing gasps on the red carpet when they arrived in striking gowns.

Best Actress nominee Demi Moore, who starred in The Substance, also won attention when she arrived at the ceremony in a bejewelled and custom-made gown by British design house Alexander McQueen. The iconic star was up against Cynthia as well as Emilia Pérez’s troubled star Karla Sofía Gascón, Hard Truths actress Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Anora’s Mikey Madison, and The Outrun’s Saoirse Ronan for the Best Actress award.

The Best Actor gong was a contest between The Brutalists’s Adrien Brody, A Complete Unknown’s Timothée Chalamet, Sing Sing star Colman Domingo, Conclave actor Ralph Fiennes, Heretic’s Hugh Grant and The Apprentice star Sebastian Stan. The coveted Best Film award was a race between erotic drama Anora, gritty historical drama The Brutalist, Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, religious drama Conclave, and controversial musical Emilia Pérez – which has been panned by Mexicans for failing to cast any native stars in the film, while lead actress Karla also sparked controversy as historic tweets came back to haunt her.
