BBC Call the Midwife star says unexpected’ finale will have viewers ‘in tears’

Call the Midwife fans are being told to brace themselves for a highly emotional season finale. The beloved BBC period drama, which is now in its 14th series, has been captivating audiences with its portrayal of nurse midwives in ’70s East London.

With six episodes already broadcast, the much-anticipated final episode is just around the corner.

Annabelle Apsion, known for her role as Violet Buckle since 2015, shared some insights with Express.co.uk at the TV Choice Awards, revealing: “It is a really uplifting finale.

“It’s not anything I would’ve thought of. It’s a lovely surprise and it weaves the continuity between the beginning of the series and the end, so it is a lovely finale.”

Alongside her was Rebecca Gethings, who plays Sister Veronica, hinting that viewers should expect tears, to which Annabelle added: “Happy and sad tears.”

Discussing Sister Veronica’s latest storyline, Rebecca mentioned: “Sister Veronica has opened up to Geoffrey about her feelings about future and paths not taken. I don’t know whether that’s going to go anywhere or not but I think it’s interesting.”

Known for her caring yet straightforward nature, Sister Veronica also has a penchant for stretching the truth, prompting Annabelle to question: “Didn’t you lie a lot at the beginning?”

Rebecca responded with laughter, recalling how Violet caught her character in a lie, reports the Express.

Annabelle said: “I did. Violet caught her out lying, that’s the last time she lied Having a lying nun, I thought, was pretty risky.” Despite the series finale of Call the Midwife being just around the corner, fans will have to hold their horses as it won’t be airing this weekend.

The second last episode of season 14 features local bin men going on strike over pay disputes, leading to a rat infestation at Nonnatus House and an outbreak of Weil’s disease.

However, this episode has been postponed to Sunday, 23 February due to the BAFTA Film Awards taking its usual slot on Sunday, 16 February.

Call the Midwife’s grand finale is set to air on Sunday, March 2 at 8pm on BBC One.
