BBC star Matt Tebbutt asks for Naga Munchetty to be ‘cut off’ after awkward exchange

BBC Breakfast turned awkward as Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt crossed over live to the Saturday Kitchen studio to ask host Matt Tebbutt what was coming up on his show.

Presenter Matt confirmed that Irish author Marian Keyes was a guest on the cookery programme which led Naga to tell Matt that he “could have prepared better”.

Matt asked: “Naga, did you have any questions for Marian? and she quickly told him: “I just think you could have prepared better Matt.

The presenter hit back: “I mean this is not a time to critique me” but Naga continued: “She’s written a book called Watermelon, you should have had a watermelon in the studio. She has also written a book called Grown Ups, where are they in the studio?”

However, Matt interrupted to inform Naga: “We do have sushi in the studio and there was a book called..” Marian finished: “Sushi for Beginners.” Matt added: “So in your face.”

After some cheering from the Saturday Kitchen studio, Naga said: “She also wrote the book The Charming Man, she got that wrong.”

Matt then playfully asked: “Can we cut her off now?” before the camera went back to BBC Breakfast studio where Charlie said to Naga: “He’s laughing on the outside.”

Earlier in the episode, Charlie was forced to cut his interview with former UK ambassador to Ukraine Simon Smith short due to a breaking news announcement.

The presenter explained: “Simon, I appreciate your time this morning and your expertise and I apologise for interrupting you but we’ve got to go straight to Gaza where the latest handover of the hostages looks like is about to begin.”

The main story of the day was the exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners held in Israel. Hamas has committed to freeing six Israeli hostages in the Saturday swap.

Israel will then release more than 600 Palestinian prisoners, the largest group of detainees freed at once since the cease-fire began in late January.

BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One at 6am and Saturday Kitchen airs weekly at 9.30am on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
