Blowing snow advisory in effect for Waterloo region, Guelph and Stratford

A blowing snow advisory has been issued for the area on Wednesday warning there could be very poor to near zero visibility at times.

Environment Canada issued the advisory for much of southern Ontario including Waterloo region, Guelph, Wellington County and Perth County. 

The advisory will remain in effect throughout the day and it says two to five cm of snow is expected to fall. 

Strong wings could gust up to 70 km/hr, as a low pressure system will move into the area. 

The weather agency warns that at times, the snow and blowing could mean travel will be hazardous. Drivers are being reminded to slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.

Vehicle preparation

As winter weather driving is now in full swing, Ontario Provincial Police are encouraging drivers to prepare their vehicles and adjust their driving habits for safer travel. 

The OPP offered the following tips:

  • Install winter tires and ensure they are properly inflated and have enough tread.
  • Check your car battery.
  • Inspect  wipers, lights, and fluids.
  • Pack an emergency kit which includes essentials like a flashlight, blanket, first aid supplies, snacks and booster cables.

Police add that winter driving conditions can be unpredictable so it’s important for drivers to stay informed about weather conditions.
