Daily US Times: Britney Spears’ father has agreed to step aside as her conservator after 13 years.
The pop star’s career has been in the hands of legal conservator, which is her father, since public concerns were raised over her mental health in 2008.
The court gave Jamie Spears, her father, control over her estate and other aspects of her life.
But the singer later sought to remove her father from the role, calling for him to be charged with “conservatorship abuse”.
Jamie Spears has consistently expressed concern for his daughter’s wellbeing and has denied any accusations of wrongdoing.
A grassroots movement of her fans, known as the #FreeBritney campaign, wants her to regain autonomy over her affairs.
This year, the prolonged legal row gained renewed attention after the release of Framing Britney Spears – a documentary which centred on the conflict over the 39-year-old’s guardianship.
The singer later told a judge that she had been forced to perform against her will, drugged and prevented from having children.
Spears’ conservatorship is split into two parts – one is for her as a person and other is for her estate and financial affairs.
Due to health crisis in 2019, her father stepped down as his daughter’s personal conservator in 2019, but the singer filed a petition in July to remove Jamie Spears from controlling her estate in July.
Britney Spears later said she would not perform again while he remained in the role.
