Daily US Times: A judge has suspended Britney Spears’ father from conservatorship that gave him control of the singer’s life after Spears accused him of years of abuse.
Jamie Spears was appointed her conservator in 2008, amid concerns over her mental health. A judge handed the role on Wednesday to a man appointed by Spears.
Britney Spears’ father denies any abuse and he had filed to end the conservatorship after Spears requested another guardian.
The singer’s fans all across the world have supported her through the #FreeBritney campaign.
A conservatorship is a guardianship granted by a court for people who are not able to make their own decisions, like those with dementia or other mental illnesses.
Spears’ is split into two parts – one for her as a person and the other for her financial and estate affairs. She hasn’t controlled her finances since 2008, according to this legal agreement.
Her father was initially in charge of both parts, but stepped down as his daughter’s personal conservator in 2019 for health reasons. A care professional named Jodi Montgomery replaced him in that role on what has been a temporary basis.
In a court hearing in Los Angeles, Judge Brenda Penny formally ended the conservatorship that Ms Spears had with her father, but left in place a separate conservatorship with an accountant chosen by the singer’s legal team.
Jamie Spears had argued that this accountant, John Zabel, wasn’t qualified to oversee the singer’s $59m fortune.
