Daily US Times: Teachers and children have been killed in a shooting at a school in the Russian city of Kazan.

Reports over the number of deaths in the shooting varied, but officials said at least seven children had died, while many more were wounded and taken to hospital.

A teenager was detained after the shooting at the school, located some 820km east of Moscow in the mainly Muslim republic of Tatarstan.

Rustam Minnikhanov, the president of Tatarstan, described the shooting as a “tragedy”.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said responding to the attack that he would review Russia’s gun control laws.

In Russia, school shootings are relatively rare. One of the last major school shootings happened in Russian-annexed Crimea in 2018.

The shooting happened on Tuesday at School No. 175. Emergency vehicles and heavily armed police responded to the incident.

Social media footage showed some children jumping from windows to escape as well as injured people being evacuated. Two of the children died after jumping from a second-floor window, according to Russian TV report.

A student who witnessed the shooting described what happened to Russian news website Mediazona.

“Everyone started panicking and saying ‘shut the doors’, the student said.

About a minute later the head teacher of the school started yelling: ‘We’re shutting the doors!’

He said: “We got out about 15 minutes later, not out of the windows. I wanted to do that, but the teacher closed the window immediately and said no.”

Reports initially said that there were two shooters at the school and that one of them had been killed. But officials later said there was only one suspect.
