Daily US Times: On Monday, Chinese armed forces conducted simultaneous military exercises to the west and east of Taiwan as analysts described that this was a warning to the self-ruled island and its supporter, the US.

China’s military said in a statement Monday that the Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning and its escorts were conducting maneuvers around Taiwan.

The statement said “It was a routine training exercise organized according to the annual work plan to test the troops’ training effectiveness and beef up their capability to safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests.”

Meanwhile, at least 10 People’s Liberation Army warplanes, including four J-10, four J-16 fighter jets, a KJ-500 early warning aircraft and a Y-8 anti-submarine warfare aircraft entered Taiwan’s self-declared air defense identification zone (ADIZ), Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said.

According to The US Federal Aviation Administration definition, an ADIZ is “a designated area of airspace over land or water within which a country requires the immediate and positive identification, location, and air traffic control of aircraft in the interest of the country’s national security.”

The Defense Ministry of Taiwan said it had a “full grasp” of the Chinese military exercises and was “appropriately handling” the matter.

China claims full sovereignty over Taiwan, an island of almost 24 million people, where full democracy prevails and it is located off the southeastern coast of mainland China, even though the two sides have been governed separately for more than seven decades.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has vowed that China will never allow Taiwan to become formally independent. China has refused to rule out the use of force, if necessary, to take the island back.
