Boxning legend Chris Eubank Sr believes his son Chris Jr is putting his life in danger by fighting long-time rival Conor Benn.
The two boxing stars have been entangled in a family feud since their fathers fought twice in 1990 and 1993. Following recent successful discussions, both men are set to to go toe-to-toe on April 26 – with the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium looking set to host the event.
Taking to X – formerly known as Twitter – on Wednesday morning, Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh wrote: “Eubank Jr vs Benn done in April, London, by the name of (Fatal Fury City of the Wolves). Soon I will announce the day and the location, it will be The Ring’s first card in collaboration with the video game and SNK, and I will push to make PPV price 19.99 GBP for the fans, with tough undercard…Lets get boxing great again and wait for huge announcement soon.”
However, before both men signed the official fight contracts, Eubank Sr told The Sun that he believed the fight would never take place and was quick to reference their 2022 planned clash, saying: “My son, if he had taken that fight where they tried to boil him down to 157, would have lost his life.”
Chris lost his son Sebastian in 2023 at the age of 29 after suffering heart attack, and is now praying that he doesn’t lose another child. “I lost Sebastian,” he continued. “What do I say about losing another one? Nothing, I just pray.” Over the last few years, there have been issues regarding a fight between Eubank Jr and Benn. The latter predominantly fights at welterweight (147Ibs), while Eubank competes in the middleweight division – two weight classes higher than his foe.
That said, according to recent reports, both fighters have agreed to a rehydration clause of 170lbs after the fight weigh-ins. It therefore means that Benn will step up to the middleweight limit to take on Eubank Jr – giving the latter a fairly big advantage in the ring. Benn has recently been cleared to reapply for his British Boxing Board of Control licence after a National Anti-Doping Panel judged that UK Anti-Doping must lift his temporary suspension as they were not “comfortably satisfied” a doping offence had been committed.
The 28-year-old Brit was under investigation after two adverse analytical findings in VADA tests for the prohibited substance clomiphene, a fertility drug which has performance-enhancing benefits. Benn’s second test was revealed just days before he was due to face Eubank Jr back in October 2022.
Hitting out at the boxing promoters responsible for the clash, Eubank Sr said: “They take no interest in the lives of the fighter, it is irresponsible. They are going to end up landing themselves in a lawsuit. The safety of boxers is No.1.”
Referencing the recent passing of boxer Paul Bamba, Chris added: “Paul said he gave himself brain damage by losing too much weight. He lost 22lbs in a matter of days. What the promoters are doing now is looking at the names and looking at the money. So, the names of the fathers Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank, they are looking at the names that draw an audience to a stadium or an arena.
“This is trampling the rules. They are running amok. It has become a world of ‘money first’. Like with the YouTube fighters, it’s the money they think about. And for the boxers, when they are headstrong, they are not thinking about safety. I know what it is like to get in there and to have lost all that weight. I know what it feels like when you are getting a hammering. It is dangerous. I know what it is like in training, when you are dehydrated.”
