A package filled with a white powdery substance has been sent to a Republican politician leading to an office in the Capitol to be evacuated.
Republican Representative for New York’s 23rd District Nick Langworthy said the package was sent to his office earlier today. An investigation is being carried out to determine the circumstances around the package being sent.
“This morning, my Clarence office received a suspicious package with a white powdery substance emanating from an envelope,” Congressman Langworthy said in a statement shared to X/ Twitter. “Following standard protocol, we immediately notified local law enforcement and Capitol Police and evacuated the office while this matter is being investigated.
“The safety of our staff and visiting public is my top priority, and until our office reopens, I urge anyone who needs assistance to call my Washington office, or one of our other district offices in Jamestown, Olean or Corning.”
Many people shared their concern about the incident on his Facebook post detailing what had happened. Mr Langworty has represented the district since 2023 and was formerly the chair of the New York State Republican Committee.
The Mirror has contacted Mr Langworthy via his social media page for comment and the Capitol Police for comment.
Suspicious packages were sent to election officials across the US in the run up to the Presidential Election. The FBI investigated instances where suspicious packages were sent to election officials in 17 states.
The people who were sent packages were secretaries of state as well as state election officials. It happened amid concerns of political violence in the US following the failed assassination attempted on President Donald Trump in July.
