‘Crucial’ garden job you must do now to bring your lawn back to life

With spring on the horizon this time last year, ITV’s This Morning brought on gardening expert Daisy Payne to dish out essential advice for sprucing up your garden.

She reassured viewers, saying: “Don’t be worried if your lawn looks a little bit rubbish at this time of year. It kind of goes to sleep over winter and it’s probably, well with all the rain I had yesterday, it’s starting to look a little bit sad.”

Showing her love for lawncare, she instructed keen gardeners: “Grab yourself a rake, a nice lightweight one, and just gently rake it. This is called aerating your lawn and it just helps to bring it back to life in time for spring.

“It just helps to stimulate a bit of growth and it also helps to get rid of things that are sitting on top of your lawn that are stopping the light getting to it.”

She elaborated on how aeration enhances the lawn’s ability to absorb water and prevents it from becoming overly soggy, which can be especially helpful in high-traffic gardens.

The garden expert also warned against unwelcome moss and fungal spots, advising special treatments and sometimes lawn food to resolve these issues. Sharing more of her green-fingered wisdom, Daisy revealed: “As soon as we start to get some sunshine, your lawn will really start to grow again so it will start to look green.

“Another little tip for you is that you can also get some fertiliser, this is a special one for this time of year.” She concluded by encouraging garden enthusiasts to “put in the work now”, suggesting that a sprinkle of fertiliser over the coming weeks could guarantee the lushest lawn in the neighbourhood come spring and summer.

Adding to her horticultural advice, she emphasised: “It really makes a difference later in the year so it is worth giving it a go.” Gardeners should note that you can sprinkle an early spring lawn fertiliser on your grass once between February and April as it starts its new growth cycle, , reports the Express. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) also suggests that feeding your lawn assists in fending off weeds and moss.

Their guidance further advises: “Apply fertilisers when the soil is moist, or when rain is expected.” Knowing the best time for this garden task could mean a lusher lawn come summertime.
