Dad-of-four dies after Wetherspoon ‘attack’ as heartbroken family pay tribute

Police have appealed for information after a dad-of-four died following an alleged attack outside a Wetherspoon pub. Officers rushed to the Mile Castle pub in Newcastle on Thursday, March 20, following reports of an attack to find a man suffering from extensive injuries at the scene.

Darren Tulip, 43, was treated by attending paramedics and taken to hospital, where medics tried to keep him alive. But despite their best efforts, he died in hospital five days later, leaving behind his heartbroken family. His loved ones have told of the moment they learned the dad had been “involved in an incident” and confirmed Darren died “surrounded by people that adored him” this week.

Police have arrested two people in connection with the incident and appealing for more information. Writing in the update on GoFundMe, Chloe Louise Tulip said the family received a phone call that changed “all our lives”. She wrote: “On the March 20 we got a phone call the would devastate all of our lives, as a lot of people would of seen Darren was involved in a incident that has now sadly lost him his life.”

Chloe added: “He’s left behind his four babies, a devastated girlfriend and a heart broken family as well as so many friends that cared about and loved him. Darren took his last breaths surrounded by people that adored him and grew his wings on Wednesday 25th March 2025.”

Other family members and friends have paid tribute to the beloved dad on social media, with several posts commemorating him posted on Facebook. One of his loved ones said: “He was the nicest lad you could meet. My heart goes out to his family.”

A third social media user wrote: “His poor family, partner, kids and so many friends have been robbed of an amazing man.”

And another said: “All of this is so wrong, I can’t believe it. One of the nicest lads Iv ever met. Fly high Darren Tulip you won’t ever be forgotten. Thinking of your family and the rest of your friends”

Another post read: “Knew him all my life he was such a lovely lad can’t believe it. Far too young fly high Tulip mate.”

One poster promised to give Darren “the best send off”. They said: “We promise as a family we will give u the best send off u deserve. You always helped everyone Darren please watch over your babies.”

The family’s GoFundMe page has now nearly smashed its £1,500 goal to help Darren’s family pay for his funeral, with dozens of donations having raised £1,325. As the family raises money to give the party-loving dad “the biggest send off with everyone there”, police have called on the public to come forward with information.

Northumbria Police confirmed in a statement that officers arrested two men in their 20s in connection to the March incident, and that the service has launched an investigation. Detective Chief Inspector, Tomasz Fowler, said specialist officers are supporting Darren’s family during the “extremely difficult time” while they follow inquiries.

Det Ch Insp fowler said: “Firstly, we’d like to say that our thoughts are firmly with the family and loved ones of Darren who has sadly died. Specially trained officers continue to support his next of kin at what must be an extremely difficult time for them.

“Our investigation into the circumstances of how Darren came to sustain his injuries continues and several lines of enquiry have already been carried out. If you have information which could assist us but have not yet made contact, please do so.”
