Olympic legend Sir Steve Redgrave has become a frequent face on TV, and might even be heading to the jungle next.
Steve, 62, has five gold medals to his name, and more recently has been showing off his skills on Dancing on Ice. While he didn’t last too long on the rink, however, he revealed that his agent has plans for him to try his luck in Australia for I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!
However, Steve admits that his agent has been discussing the possibility of heading Down Under with him for several years – but the messages were not what he wanted to hear. Despite his agents pleas, he agreed to take part in Dancing On Ice but that may have all changed. Now, the star has revealed he’s keen to put himself through more challenges which may include a terrifying Bushtucker Challange.
“We’ll see. My compromise was to do Dancing on Ice – at the moment. But never say never,” Steve teasingly told The Sun. Showing that he’d put some thought into the jungle, he then revealed that he thought he’d “survive” the challenge quite well, but wouldn’t expect to enjoy it at all.
“I’m quite a fussy eater so I wouldn’t do well with the limited calories you get. It might be quite good for my figure from that point of view! It’s something I would consider,” he said.
The beloved public figure also spoke about his time on Dancing on Ice, admitting he was “delighted” to have been kept in during the first two episodes, but was eventually “relieved” to be voted off after worrying that he was seeing better skaters leave before him. “Seeing Chelsee and Ferne being knocked out… the guilt on Sunday nights and Mondays was immense. I’d be thinking, ‘Yes, the public have kept me in. But they’ve kept the worst skater in!’” he admitted.
Steve recently revealed the secret health struggles that may have impacted his ice skating ability – and could also work against him if he enters the jungle. “I’ve been diabetic for almost thirty years so the sensation in my feet isn’t as good as what it used to be so navigating my footing on the ice could be a problem,” he shared.
Alongside diabetes, another medical condition could have made skating more dangerous for him than the others. He shared: “I also have Dupuytren’s contracture which affects my hands meaning I can’t make them flat. So if I do fall over, although I’m planning not to, it means I may have trouble getting up.”
Steve jokingly explained that a coincidence led to him being persuaded to join Dancing on Ice, after it was noted that he shared a special anniversary with Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean. “Chris and Jayne celebrated their 40th anniversary of them winning in Sarajevo and it’s my 40th anniversary as well,” he said.
“The show asked me to record a segment for Chris and Jayne and what they mean to British sport both then and now and at the end of it I said ‘I suppose you’re going to try and get me on the show now,’ and here I am.”
