Actor Danny Dyer has confessed to being on the “verge of tears” during a touching conversation with his daughter Dani’s fiancé Jarrod Bowen.
The 47 year old actor appeared on The Jonathan Ross Show in an episode that will air this Saturday, where he candidly discussed his family and his Love Island daughter Dani, who is engaged to marry West Ham footballer Jarrod. On the talk show, Dyer talked about his excitement over his daughter’s engagement and his role in giving her away on her big day, calling the tradition “a mad thing”. He said: “The idea of giving your daughter away – I don’t like that. But if you’re going to give your daughter away, give your daughter to the West Ham captain! It’s amazing”.
Clearly a Hammers fan, Danny piled on the praise for his soon-to-be son-in-law, opening up about how he had been extremely emotional when fiancé Jarrod asked for Dani’s hand. The East Londoner complimented Jarrod, calling him a “very humble, brilliant, beautiful man who worships the ground she walks on,” recalling how he had called to “ask for the hand in marriage” which brought him “on the verge of tears”. He joked: “I was trying to be the hard man of course”.
The age-old tradition meant a lot to the actor as her explained how he asked for his own father-in-law’s blessing at the time of proposing to his wife Joanne. Danny described how he “went round there” to ask but didn’t “think he was a massive fan of [his] to be fair. I was a bit of a t**t to be honest”.
Jokingly, host Jonathan asked Danny whether he would have been just as happy to bless the engagement if Jarrod was playing for Millwall F.C to which Danny replied, “we might have had some issues”. He clarified the matter, saying: “Listen, he loves her and adores her and that’s all I want. It’s just such a bonus that he plays for West Ham”. Over the moon for his daughter, Danny continued, saying he does “feel sorry” for his other daughter Sunnie as “there is no man she can bring home that will match. [Dani] has brought home the ideal man for me“.
Reality star Dani, 28, welcomed her son Santiago with her former partner Sammy Kimmence in 2021, and her twin daughters Summer and Star with fiancé Jarrod Bowen just two years on in 2023.
On the topic of his grandchildren, Danny Dyer, candidly talked about how “f*****” and “exhausted” daughter Dani is from raising her three children. Insisting they are still “a gift,” Danny still showed concern for his daughter, saying: “My Dani is f***ed. She’s exhausted – three kids under four. They terrorise me,” highlighting the real struggles of parenthood. Grandfather Danny said: “I say ”Dan, that’s enough now”,” referring to the subject of having more children. “They’re 100 miles an hour. They just want to destroy things in front of them,” added the ex EastEnders star.
Danny’s appearance was to promote his upcoming film Marching Powder, which is releasing in March as an ‘unofficial’ sequel to a cult classic 2004 film The Football Factory. Starring in the 2000’s favourite film as 29-year-old Tommy Johnson whose life revolves around weekend football matches – the newest film conveys a similar premise. Danny returns to Tommy’s home, only this time as a new character named Jack who faces the challenge of flipping his life around at the threat of facing a sentence of time in prison. On the new film, Dyer “swears” that it is “something very, very different” and that viewers “will see a lot of [him] doing press over the coming weeks”.
