Daily US Times: Police in Austria’s capital Vienna said gunmen armed with rifles have opened fire in six different locations in central Vienna, which led killing two people and wounding several more.
Sebastian Kurz, the Chancellor of Austria, called it a “repulsive terror attack” and said one gunman was also killed.
The interior minister said, police were searching for at least one attacker who was still at large.
The shootings took place near Vienna’s central synagogue but it is unclear if that was the target.
Mayor Michael Ludwig said one of the victims was killed at the scene while a second – a woman – died later in hospital from her wounds. It is believed 14 other people remain in hospital and six are in serious condition.
The interior ministry also said a police officer is among the injured.
The attack happened just hours before the country imposed new national restrictions to try to stem rising coronavirus cases. Many people were out enjoying restaurants and bars which are now closed until the end of November.
European leaders strongly condemned the shooting in Vienna. British PM Boris Johnson said he was “deeply shocked by the terrible attacks”.
The incident began near the Seitenstettengasse synagogue, which is the main temple in Vienna, according to the police.
Jewish community leader Oskar Deutsch tweeted that the synagogue was closed at the time the attack began at 20:00 local time.
It was immediately unclear how many attackers took part in the shooting. Austrian media, citing the interior ministry, said one person had been arrested.
