Daily US Times, Tel Aviv: Hamas militants successfully duped dozens of Israeli soldiers by posing as women seeking attention. Israeli military confirms it but denied of any significant data breach.

A spokesperson for the Israeli military said, the soldiers were sent fake photos of young females and lured into downloading an app. The soldiers did not know that third party could gain access to their handsets through the app.

But Israel said the there was no “significant breach of information” before the scam was foiled.

Hamas and Israel view each other as mortal enemies. Gaza is controlled by Hamas.

The attempt was the third of this kind in recent years by Hamas to infiltrate Israeli soldiers’ phones. The latest was the most sophisticated yet, according to Lt Col Jonathan Conricus.

He said in order to convince the soldiers, the hackers masqueraded as young women with imperfect Hebrew, claiming to be immigrants or to have visual or hearing impairments.

After building friendships, the ‘women’ would send links which they said would enable them to exchange photos. But in reality, the link caused the soldiers to download malware – programmes that can attack smartphones or computer devices.

Once a soldier opened the link, the programme would install a virus that allows the hacker access to the phone’s data, including contacts, pictures, and location. The malware could also take photos and make recordings without the owner’s knowledge.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had uncovered the plot several months ago but had let it continue under surveillance until they shut it down, Col Conricus said.

The IDF previously warned soldiers about these hacking attempts and issued guidelines.

Hamas and Israel engaged themselves in a permanent state of conflict and both have been gathering intelligence about one another as part of their ongoing hostilities.
