Viewers took to social media to slam a “mistake” during EastEnders‘ live episode on Thursday night as Martin Fowler died.
Actor James Bye bowed out of the role after more than 10 years, with Martin perishing after The Queen Vic collapsed. Martin, who debuted on the show in its first year in 1985, was killed off with ex Stacey Slater by his side during the 40th anniversary episodes.
Viewers were in pieces over the twist that saw him crushed by a metal beam as the building collapsed around him and Stacey. He saved Stacey before pouring his heart out to her, with the pair reconciling and even agreeing to remarry.
But tragedy struck as paramedics warned Stacey that Martin was at risk of crush syndrome, that could cause kidney issues and a cardiac arrest so to prepare herself. Martin realised something was wrong and gave Stacey a speech in heartbreaking scenes.
Just as they managed to free him Martin went into cardiac arrest. Sadly at the end of the episode Martin was killed off in devastating scenes, with Stacey by his side.
Viewers watching at home were devastated, while the death had been hinted at for weeks. Many fans raced to slam the “mistake” of killing him off though, furious that Martin died.
It seemed to be actor James’ decision to leave the role, leading to soap boss Chris Clenshaw and storyliners plotting his tragic end after 40 years. Taking to X, fans called the exit “a big mistake” with one writing: “The worst decision this show has made. I remember when Martin was born. What a mistake.”
Another fan agreed: “Big mistake,” as a third wrote: “This has to be one of the worst decisions on EE.” A fourth fan posted: “Killing Martin off on EastEnders was such a bad move,” as a fifth added: “Such a bad mistake.”
James spoke about his exit after the scenes aired, and said: “Saying goodbye is not easy, but after 10 years at EastEnders and on the night of the shows epic 40th anniversary – the time felt right. It’s an honour to leave on a story of this magnitude.
“A huge thank you to all the fans of the show – EastEnders wouldn’t be what it is without you – and to the BBC and EastEnders team for trusting me with this role for so many years. This fruit and veg man will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s time to look forward, and I’m incredibly excited for what the future holds. RIP Martin Fowler.”
