Elliot Lee escaped death as devastating car crash pics shared by ‘lucky’ Wrexham star

Wrexham AFC star Elliot Lee has shared a heartfelt message after revealing how he narrowly avoided death in a car crash.

The 30-year-old and former West Ham United player was travelling home after the Red Dragons’ 1-0 Vertu Trophy win over Bolton Wanderers at the Racecourse Ground last Tuesday night when the two-vehicle collision occurred, with both drivers quickly rushed to hospital. Despite escaping any serious injuries, Lee has missed Wrexham’s last two games, including their disappointing 2-1 home defeat against Leyton Orient in League One last night.

Lee has now provided an update on social media, with pictures of his mangled car showing how lucky he was to emerge relatively unscathed.

The midfielder, son of Newcastle United legend Rob Lee, said in a post on Instagram: “Last Tuesday night I found out just how fragile life is and in the blink of an eye, through no fault of your own, it has the potential to change drastically. Thankfully I had someone looking over me, but I’m well aware of how different the outcome could’ve been.

“It has been overwhelming to see how much people care and the love and support I have around me with my family and friends. It has been a tough week, but I’m feeling very lucky and very grateful.”

Lee expressed his gratitude to the emergency teams who attended the collision, with the nature of the injuries sustained by the other driver currently unknown. He also voiced his thanks for all the well wishes he has received, saying “it means a lot”.

He added: “A huge thank you to @kevmulholland @adermmm (Wrexham medical staff) and my partner for rushing to my aid and spending all night in the hospital with me. Hoping to be back on the pitch asap.”

Meanwhile, Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said it would be “difficult” to put an exact timescale on Lee’s return.

Speaking about his condition earlier this week, the former Sunderland and Bolton boss said: “Elliot is key player for us, he’s our top scorer and we need him back obviously but we’ve got to make sure he’s right.

“Obviously the trauma of that takes its toll on you a little bit. He’s very shaken up as you can imagine and we’re pleased that he’s okay. We want to give him a bit of time before he comes back.”

Lee’s crash happened just weeks after his teammate James McClean was also involved in a collision ahead of Wrexham’s crucial promotion clash against Birmingham City.

Lee has been a key figure since joining the club in the summer of 2022, scoring 39 goals across 111 appearances. He was a regular feature in the team which gained back-to-back promotions from the National League and League One.

The former Luton player has made 31 appearances for the North Wales outfit so far this season, scoring eight goals across all competitions. Wrexham are currently third in the League One table and chasing a third successive promotion.
