Erling Haaland eats baffling post-match snack after Man City injury scare

Erling Haaland enjoyed a post-match steak after Manchester City’s 4-0 win over Newcastle on Saturday.

January signing Omar Marmoush scored a first-half hat-trick, while James McAtee also scored a late goal. And Haaland shared a photo on his Instagram story of him eating a steak shortly after the win, with the striker writing: “Small feast after game”.

Haaland’s post comes after he limped off the field late in the match with a knee injury, with City boss Pep Guardiola left sweating on his fitness ahead of their huge Champions League clash with Real Madrid on Wednesday.

City trail 3-2 after losing the first leg last week and Haaland will be a huge miss for City if he is sidelined. “Everyone was scared when he went down,” Guardiola said when asked about Haaland in his post-match press conference.

“I haven’t spoken with him or the doctors, but hopefully he will be fine. We will see. Maybe it’s not as bad as it could be.” Before he was forced off, Haaland captained City with former skipper Kyle Walker having joined AC Milan in January.

Kevin de Bruyne has replaced Walker as City’s captain, but with the playmaker on the bench it was Haaland who was given the armband by Guardiola ahead of the likes of Ilkay Gundogan and John Stones.

“Haaland has signed a 10 year contract, so I have the feeling about him as captain,” Guardiola explained. “I am really happy for him. Sooner or later (he will be permanent captain). It’s a question of time.”

Guardiola also hailed Marmoush after his hat-trick, with the Egyptian set to lead the line against Madrid if Haaland is not fit. “Marmoush did really well in Germany. A player with his quality and pace, I was pleased with the way he scored,” Guardiola said.

“In the final third he was really good. We knew sooner or later he would score goals, he is a good finisher. Of course he has to improve, but now we see how he handles the compliments. The way we played, we remembered what we were, and what we have not been this season.

“We always try, but sometimes we cannot do it. I am really pleased with the pace and intensity we had up front. We need to win these games to qualify for the Champions League. We have to make this kind of performance to send our people home happy.”
