Europa League match suspended and players taken off as riot police rush into stands

Anderlecht’s Europa League match with Fenerbahce was suspended after just seven minutes as riot police rushed into the stands to deal with disorder among fans.

Turkish side Fenerbahce took the lead just four minutes into the match in Brussels through a strike from Youssef En-Nesyri, taking their advantage to 4-0 on aggregate, but shortly afterwards the referee took both sets of players off the pitch and the match was halted after he was alerted to a security issue in the stands.

Video footage captured from inside the stadium showed riot police and stewards attempting to intervene in clashes between fans and officials, with Fenerbache players pulled away from the side of the pitch.

Swiss referee Sandro Schaerer pulled both sets of players together in the centre of the pitch away from the fighting, before eventually ordering them off the field of play.

Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho swiftly headed down the tunnel along with the rest of his staff and squad, with Anderlecht’s staff and substitutes – including the former Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen – also swiftly leaving the action.

Both sets of players were off the pitch for around 15 minutes before returning to restart the game.
