Europe’s ‘best destination’ for solo travellers is a sun-soaked island

A sun-soaked coastal city boasting 300 days of sunshine a year has been crowned the best place for solo travellers to visit.

A study by Wizz Air placed the Greek city of Rhodes at the top of the list, with over 75 per cent of solo-traveller reviews awarding the destination five stars. The city’s attractions and eateries also received high praise.

Rhodes offers a bustling waterfront where cruise ships dock and vendors sell mouth-watering Greek delicacies. Despite its popularity, it manages to avoid being overrun by crowds, although it does get busy during peak summer season.

Beaches are just a short stroll from the city centre, or you can delve into the medieval old town to uncover tales of crusaders and knights. After exploring the imposing Byzantine walls of the 13th-century fort, make sure to visit the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes to see an awe-inspiring floor mosaic that was transported across the sea to be installed in its current location.

Despite suffering wildfires in the summer of 2023, Rhodes has made a strong recovery. The Mirror visited two weeks after the blaze and found the island functioning smoothly again, despite areas of hillside charred by the fire.

The Dodecanese island, like many parts of Greece, is known for its hospitality. If you’re a solo traveller, expect to be welcomed with open arms and treated to not only mouth-watering food but also the company of friendly locals.

Rhodes, a popular tourist hotspot, welcomes 2.6 million visitors each year, despite having a local population of just 125,000. This means it’s well-equipped to cater to all types of travellers and offers plenty of opportunities for fascinating encounters.

Another advantage of Rhodes for solo travellers is its affordability. With flexible dates, you can find direct flights from Manchester and London this March and April for less than £40.

There are numerous budget-friendly hotels in the city, such as the Manousos City Hotel, which currently has rooms available from £25 a night.
