With temperatures set to rise and daylight hours slowly extending, many Brits will be rolling up their sleeves to get their gardens spring-ready.
One of the most common tasks on the list is lawn mowing, but knowing when to start can be a bit tricky as cutting the grass too soon could harm it. Chris McIlroy from The Grass People has now revealed the perfect time to begin mowing your lawn.
He advises gardeners to let their lawns grow to a certain length before making the first cut of the season. Cutting lawns that are too short might damage the grass and prevent it from growing back properly.
Chris explained: “We recommend that the ideal height of your grass should be around 5cm to 7cm before you cut it, and this goes for all our grass seed mixtures.
“This is simply because if the grass has reached this height, it is viable, growing well and can be cut. If it isn’t reaching this height, it either isn’t established, or something is stunting its growth.”
According to the experts, this height is “perfect” for your lawn’s first trim. However, gardeners need to ensure their mowers are also set to the right height to avoid cutting the grass too short, reports the Express.
After mowing, make sure to remove all clippings to prevent thatch build-up. And remember, never mow your lawn when it’s frosty or wet.
