Former US marine suspected of killing four, including a baby

Daily US Times: A former US marine has shot and killed four people, including a woman and her baby boy in her arms, before surrendering, according to police. The baby was just three months old and the shooting took place in Florida.

Police alleged that the shooter is Bryan Riley, 33, a former US marine. The attacker also allegedly wounded an 11-year-old girl on Sunday in a shootout in Lakeland near Tampa in central Florida. The girl underwent surgery for 7 gunshot injuries.

Riley had no connection to the victims, and police alleged that he exchanged fire with police before giving up. Polk County sheriff Grady Judd told a news conference that the former US marine later tried to grab an officer’s gun while being treated in the hospital for his own gunshot wound, before being subdued again.

A veteran of the US wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Riley was working as a security guard and a bodyguard. His girlfriend of four years told investigators he suffered from occasional depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, Judd said.

Judd said that about a week ago, his mental health worsened and he told his girlfriend he had started speaking with God.

Judd said at a second news conference: “He said at one point to our detectives: ‘They begged for their lives, and I killed them anyway.”
