Daily US Times: French police arrested a woman for stealing jewellery from coffins. The woman is in her sixties.

When a grieving family saw an unknown mourner at the funeral of their relative in northern France, they thought nothing of it.

The woman said she was a friend of the deceased, so the family left her to pay her respects at the open coffin.

But when the elatives came back later, the deceased had been stripped of her jewellery: her ring, earrings and necklace had all vanished, according to French media.

The family informed police, they investigated and soon identified a suspect: a woman living not far from the funeral home, in the town of Liévin.

Police detained the woman and found the missing jewellery in her possession, but that was not all. Police were soon able to link the woman with the theft of a wallet from the body of a man at the same funeral home, earlier on the same day, Tuesday 24 August.

It is speculated that she theft from coffins previously too.

Police also found a stack of recent death notices when the suspect’s home was searched. Included in the notices were the access codes for family members to enter the individual rooms where the coffins of their relatives were reposing.

She will appear in court in 2022.
