Girl, 11, takes own life after being bullied by fellow pupils over family’s immigration status

An 11-year-old girl has tragically ended her own life with her mother alleging that bullying over her family’s immigration status was the cause.

Jocelyn Rojo Carranza passed away on February 8, just five days after she was discovered unresponsive in her family home.

Speaking to KUVN, a local news channel, Marbella, Jocelynn’s mother, revealed the heartbreaking circumstances leading up to her daughter’s death, saying she faced mockery at school.

“They were going to call immigration so they could take her parents away, and she would be left alone,” Carranza disclosed to KUVN.

While not specifying her family’s immigration status, Carranza claimed that Gainesville Intermediate School in Texas, US, where Jocelynn was a student, knew about the bullying but failed to inform her. Moreover, Marbella stated that although her daughter received counseling, she only learned of this through investigators.

“It appears the school was aware of it all, but they never, they never told me what was happening with my daughter,” Carranza expressed during the interview. “It appears she would go once or twice a week to counseling to report what was happening. (I want) justice because it’s not fair – the school was negligent for not keeping me informed of what was going on with my daughter,” she insisted.

The Gainesville Independent School District has yet to clarify its awareness of the bullying incidents, reports the Mirror US.

“Whenever we receive a report of bullying, we respond swiftly to ensure all students are safe physically and emotionally. While we cannot release any information about specific students or incidents, our schools have several policies in place to combat bullying and resolve conflicts,” the district stated to CNN.

The funeral service took place at St. Mary Catholic Church. A mariachi band filled the church with sombre music from the balcony, and Jocelynn’s casket, draped in a white cloth, lay in the same church where she was baptised 11 years ago.

“She didn’t know how to understand the things that happen in the world,” said Gelasio Garcia, a deacon at the church, during the service, as reported by CNN.

The school’s police will continue their investigation into the alleged bullying.
