Harrison Ford described his role in a new film as “being an idiot for money” for the whole running time.
The iconic actor, known for his roles in Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Shrinking, is no stranger to making light-hearted comments about his work during interviews.
He’s been famously blunt, from expressing irritation over tedious questions regarding his most famous characters to admitting indifference about Han Solo’s fate. His interviews are a hit with fans for their honesty.
However, his latest appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thaddeus Ross, stepping into the shoes of the late William Hurt who appeared in The Incredible Hulk and Black Widow, has Ford openly labelling his character as just a bit of fun.
Ford joked that he was an “idiot for money” for his role in Captain America: Brave New World He said: “What did it take? It took not caring. It took being an idiot for money, which I’ve done before.”
His remarks echo those of Anthony Hopkins, an Academy Award winner who once referred to his own film roles as “pointless” acting exercises.
Hopkins had commented: “They put me in armor; they shoved a beard on me. Sit on the throne, shout a bit. If you’re sitting in front of a green screen, it’s pointless acting it.”
Some eagle-eyed Reddit fans, in a thread on r/comicbookmovies, picked up that Ford seemed downright chuffed about playing the fool in his new gig. One Redditor remarked: “To be fair, Ford actually described the job here as fun, which is more of a compliment than he usually gives.”
Another jumped in with: “People take him too seriously. He loves acting and enjoying life. When people ask him, what he feels to be, stupid questions, he gives a stupid answer back. To him, it’s just a job and not real. So when people try to make it real, he just messes with them.”
A third contributed their two pence, saying: “It’s refreshing when actor stops getting high and mighty on their own farts about the art of a project and straight up says ‘I had fun and I got paid’. Acting is a job first and foremost, and it’s bizarre that more of them don’t remind themselves of that.”
While another sought to probe further: “Legit question – when was the last time Ford seemed genuinely passionate about his job? ” The fandom couldn’t quite pinpoint Ford’s most spirited role, musing it might just be his unique interview demeanour at play.
One user opined: “He enjoys acting and messing with people. People think he’s massively stuck up and hates doing what he does. He doesn’t. He just loves being an a**.”
Another added: “It feels like he has a dry personality and can be pretty sarcastic and witty. That tends to throw people off. I enjoy it, but I understand not everyone does. He and Conan O’Brien seem to have a good relationship, and I’d say Conan’s a pretty good judge of character.”
