Daily US Times: Hong Kong is to impose a mandatory 14-day quarantine on all visitors from mainland China. The city is struggling to protect itself from the spread of a Coronavirus outbreak.

The policy will come under effect on Sunday. But HK officials will not close the entire border with China as demanded by medical staff who have been on strike for authority’s order to stop all visitors from mainland China.

Hong Kong reported 21 Coronavirus cases so far as one person died. The city suffered 300 deaths in the SARS outbreak in 2002-03.

In mainland China, there are 24,300 confirmed coronavirus cases and 490 deaths reported so far.

On Tuesday alone, additional 4,000 cases and 65 deaths added to the numbers.

Twenty-five countries reported Coronavirus cases although there are only two deaths reported so far. One is in Hong Kong and another one from the Philippines.

World Health Organization declared the situation a global health emergency.

The chief of the organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, on Wednesday appealed for $675m (£520m) to fund a three-month response plan.

Meanwhile, Japanese health authorities said at least 10 people onboard a cruise ship docked in the Japanese port of Yokohama have tested positive for coronavirus.

The cruise ship’s Diamond Princess is carrying 3,700 passengers. But nearly 300 have been tested so far. The number of infected could rise as testing continues.

An 80-year-old Hong Kong man who had been on the ship last month fell ill with the virus. After revealing the information, Japanese health authorities decided to check the ship.

What action has HK taken?

Hong Kong’s chief executive Carrie Lam said anyone arriving from mainland China, including foreigners, would be quarantined for 14 days from Saturday, but she did not say how this would be imposed.

Where the quarantines would take place is still unknown. Tens of thousands of people arrived from the mainland on Tuesday.
