Hotel worker reveals grim reality about cleanliness of duvets and pillows

A hotel worker has taken to social media to expose the grim reality of hotel cleanliness, leaving many holidaymakers second-guessing their next stay.

For most, a hotel stay is a welcome break from the everyday routine, but according to this insider’s revelations on the travel forum, it might not be as luxurious as we think. The employee shared some unsettling truths about the cleaning practices in hotels, revealing that certain items often get overlooked during routine cleanings.

They began with a shocking confession: “Most hotels do not wash the big duvet, they only wash the sheets,” adding that exceptions were made at one establishment only if the white duvet had visible stains.

But the horror didn’t end there – the worker claimed their current hotel had an even more disturbing approach to hygiene. “The hotel I just started at is even worse. They have brown duvets that literally never ever get washed,” they warned.

The employee also shed light on varying practices worldwide, stating: “And in Asia, I think it’s not common to have a top sheet in the bed, so you are just supposed to raw dog the dirty duvet,” In contrast, they noted: “At least in the hotel I worked at in Europe, you could sandwich yourself between the two sheets and not really touch the big blanket once you’re inside.”

This candid revelation has sparked widespread discussions and concerns about hotel cleanliness standards among travellers, reports the Daily Record. “Now every time I go to a hotel, I can’t touch these blankets lol. But I’m sure some are actually good and wash everything, I hope.”

The duvets may not be the only concern, as the individual also pointed out that “Also the pillows underneath those pillowcases are filthy, covered in yellow/brownish spots, but I’ve only seen that here in South Korea,” they admitted.

Their unsettling observations didn’t end there; they highlighted that even the pillows lack cleanliness, saying: “The ones I’ve seen in the past seemed more waterproof. I’m grossed out lol, a pillowcase doesn’t feel like enough to separate myself from that.”

The traveller concluded with a personal habit picked up due to these experiences: “And now I still wear my flip flops in the shower like it’s a communal bathroom lol.” The thread quickly became a place for others to share their hotel horror tales.

A commenter chimed in: “Lol if you think the duvets are bad, think about the couches and stuff like that. Gets cleaned once a year, tops.” And a particularly disturbing revelation came from another individual who commented: “I used to do network installs at hotels. Don’t ever move the beds, it’s better not to know. Sometimes it’s used condoms, sometimes it’s puke, sometimes it’s both.”
