Huge change to James Bond film franchise – four years after last movie

The bosses behind James Bond have shared a major update amidst speculation over the new film.

It comes following rumours over who may succeed Wirral-born actor Daniel Craig, who last portrayed the iconic James Bond in the 2021 movie, No Time To Die. But the franchise will no longer be controlled by the mastermind behind the movie, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson, who have announced they are stepping down.

The 007 films were first launched by Albert ‘Cubby’ Broccoli in 1962 before his daughter and stepson stepped into his role. Now, the Broccoli dynasty has handed over creative control to Amazon MGM Studios – which formed when Amazon purchased Bond’s parent studio just three years ago.

Currently, speculation is rife over who will take on the role of the secret agent from Daniel Craig who had previously starred as Bond in Casino Royale (2006), Skyfall (2012), Spectre (2015) and No Time To Die. Names in the running include James Norton, Tom Hardy, Aaron Taylor-Johnson Taron Edgerton and Josh O’Connor.

Amazon will now be responsible for deciding who steps into the legendary shoes of the character, who is tasked with serving His Majesty’s Government and defending the nation from espionage. In a statement, it was announced that Barbara and Michael will “remain co-owners of the franchise” but Amazon MGM Studios will gain “creative control.”

Michael, 83, said: “With my 007 career spanning nearly 60 incredible years, I am stepping back from producing the James Bond films to focus on art and charitable projects. Therefore, Barbara and I agree, it is time for our trusted partner, Amazon MGM Studios, to lead James Bond into the future.”

Barbara added: “My life has been dedicated to maintaining and building upon the extraordinary legacy that was handed to Michael and me by our father, producer Cubby Broccoli. I have had the honour of working closely with four of the tremendously talented actors who have played 007 and thousands of wonderful artists within the industry.

“With the conclusion of No Time to Die and Michael retiring from the films, I feel it is time to focus on my other projects.” Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, said: “Since his theatrical introduction over 60 years ago, James Bond has been one of the most iconic characters in filmed entertainment.

“We are grateful to the late Albert R Broccoli and Harry Saltzman for bringing James Bond to movie theatres around the world, and to Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for their unyielding dedication and their role in continuing the legacy of the franchise that is cherished by legions of fans worldwide.

“We are honoured to continue this treasured heritage, and look forward to ushering in the next phase of the legendary 007 for audiences around the world.”
