‘I’m a weight loss expert – this 49p food keeps you full and helps you shed fat’

A 49p kitchen cupboard staple can help keep you full and shed weight. Weight loss expert Professor Franklin Joseph says beans such as cannellini, red kidney and chickpeas aren’t only cheap but they are low in calories.

And with them being packed with protein and fibre it means they are ideal to help slimmers feel fuller for longer. They also offer slow-release energy which prevents spikes in blood sugar and helps keep your appetite satisfied while reducing cravings for unhealthy foods.

Professor Joseph of Dr Frank’s Weight Loss Clinic said: “Fibre and protein are incredibly important for anyone who is trying to lose weight, and beans have plenty of them both. On top of this, they are also low in calories and nutrient-dense, making them hugely beneficial if your aim is losing fat.”

He added: “Beans come in a variety of forms including cannelloni, red kidney, soy, and chickpeas, and their versatility makes them a really useful ingredient for adding protein and fibre to meals. However, it’s important to read the label to correctly track nutritional value as some products, including baked beans which many of us eat regularly, can come with lots of added sugar or salt.”

Beans are the seeds of plants in the legume family, and are often sold either fresh or dried, making them longer-lasting. Prof Joseph said they are rich in protein which is an important nutrient for building and repairing muscle.

Their fibre content helps with digestion and keeps blood sugar levels steady, which helps fend off insulin spikes which could lead to fat storage. This helps to keep your energy levels more stable energy during the day.

They are also rich in folate which is essential for healthy cell growth and function, and iron, essential for red blood cell production. And they contain good levels of nutrients including magnesium, potassium, copper, zinc, manganese, selenium, and vitamins B1, B6, E, and K.

Some of the major UK supermarkets – including Aldi – sell 400g tins of cannellini beans, red kidney beans and butter beans for just 49p. They can be incorporated into a variety of meals, from salads and soups to wraps and stews, making them a versatile option for dieters.

Prof Joseph added: “The foods we eat play a huge role in helping us reach our weight loss goals so it’s important to be aware of what we eat. Focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats. These foods nourish your body and keep you feeling full longer, which can help prevent overeating.”
