Impeachment Trial: Trump acquitted by the Senate, How did he react?

Daily US Times, Washington: US President Donald Trump has been acquitted by the Senate impeachment trial, ending a congressional attempt to remove him from the bitterly divided US.

Trump’s Republican Party holds the majority in the Senate. Senators voted to acquit him 52-48 on charges of abuse of power and 53-47 on obstruction of Congress.

Last December, Democrats charged president Trump for pressuring Ukraine to smear a potential White House rival.

Trump will be the first president in history who goes for reelection being impeached in the House.

Senate’s historic vote on Wednesday decided not to remove America’s 45th president from office. That’s how an overwhelming and divided impeachment proceeding comes to an end.

If Trump is convicted on either of charge, he had to hand over the office to Vice President Mike Pence.

The House approved the two articles of impeachment on December 18. The chamber is lead by the Democrats.

Acquitted by the Senate, How did Trump react?

Trump has been always denied any wrongdoings. After acquitted by the Senate, his reelection campaign issued a statement saying “President Trump has been totally vindicated and it’s now time to get back to the business of the American people.

“The do-nothing Democrats know they can’t beat him, so they had to impeach him.” The statement added “this terrible ordeal” and “nonsense” was merely a Democratic campaign tactic.

“This impeachment hoax will go down as the worst miscalculation in American political history.”

According to Gallup, Trump’s personal approval rating with American voters hit a personal best of 49% this week. The president would speak about the case on Thursday.

How did the Democrats react?

The result was predictable for all parties. The vote result published, Democrats expressed concern that acquittal would further embolden a president whom they depict as a demagogue.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi described Trump as “an ongoing threat to American democracy” and that Senate Republicans had “normalized lawlessness”.

Chuck Schumer, Senate Democratic leader said there will always be “a giant asterisk next to the president’s acquittal”.

The New York senator said, “No doubt, the president will boast he received total exoneration.
