Katy Perry has been slammed for “having no empathy” after launching a $6million lawsuit against a bedridden 85-year-old veteran.
The pop star, 40, purchased a $15 million (about £12 million) home in Montecito, California for her and her husband actor Orlando Bloom, in July 2020. They snapped up the 1930s estate in the celebrity enclave but days later owner Carl Westcott tried to pull out of the deal saying he was not of sound mind when it was made.
The celebrity couple went into a legal battle with Carl, which ruled in Perry’s favour in 2023. A Los Angeles Superior Court judge ruled that Carl had the proper mental capacity. “Wescott presented no persuasive evidence that he lacked capacity to enter into a real estate contract,” the court’s decision read. Katy and Orlando won the battle, meaning they became the legal owner of the 9,000 sq. ft. home that sits on a 2.5 acre plot.
They received the keys last year but Katy has now launched a $6million lawsuit seeking back rent and alleged damages against Carl, who suffers from a neurological disorder. The Westcott family have hit out at the Firework hitmaker as they branded her “greedy”. They also slammed the “Hollywood elite system” and accused celebrities of “treating ordinary people like dirt”.
Carl’s son Chart Westcott told The Sun. “She has no sense of fair play, no empathy, zero empathy, quite the opposite.” He said his father is currently bedridden with the decline in his health being “constant”. “The worse the condition my father is in, the harsher they’ve been in trial,” Chart said of Katy and her lawyers.
Katy was declared the legal owner of the gated mansion in December 2023, after almost four-years in a legal battle with Carl. She wants to knock off around $6million from the sale price, claiming Carl owes her vast sums for repairs and lost rental income. The family has disputed her claims, alleging the damages are “absolutely egregious”.
“There’s no real explanation other than greed,” Chart told the publication. “This is such a small deal to be worried about – I think its a matter of privilege – her lawyers and her business manager are dealing with it.” He claimed the showbiz couple are “unforgivable how they have conducted their affairs” and have been “unreasonable from the start”.
Chart claims his dad, who has Huntington’s disease, has “not talked about this damages case”. Carl’s entire immediate family all plan to attend LA Superior Court, including son Court Westcott who is married to Real Housewives of Dallas alum Kameron Westcott. Chart added his father is in a “horrible condition” and has been bedridden for “well over 18 months”.
