Max Verstappen and Carlos Alcaraz are among the nominees who could be crowned Laureus World Sportsman of the Year next month.
Verstappen enjoyed another stellar year in Formula 1, winning a fourth consecutive world title, while Alcaraz won Wimbledon, the French Open and a Silver medal at the Olympics.
France’s Olympic hero, Leon Marchand, Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar and Olympic pole vault gold medallist Mondo Duplantis make up the five-man shortlist after Jannik Sinner’s nomination for the award was withdrawn last week in the wake of his three-month doping ban.
The men’s award was won by Novak Djokovic last year and this year’s recipient will be announced at the prestigious awards ceremony in Madrid on April 21.
Simone Biles is among the names in contention for the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year award. Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmati, Australian and US Open champion Aryna Sabalenka and Olympic gold medal-winners Sifan Hassan, Faith Kipyegon and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone make up a star-studded field.
Real Madrid have been nominated for the Team of the Year award after winning the Champions League for a 15th time, as have the Spain national team following their Euro 2024 triumph. McLaren, Barcelona women, the Boston Celtics and the USA men’s basketball are also in contention for recognition.
Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal is up for the Breakthrough of the Year award which was claimed by Alcaraz last year. He faces competition from Bayer Leverkusen, Summer McIntosh, Julien Alfred, Letsile Tebogo and Victor Wembanyama.
Team GB’s Tom Pidcock is up for the Action Sportsperson of the Year award after successfully defending his Olympic title in mountain biking in the summer, while Street League, an organisation who use sport to try and help young people gain employment, also represent Britain in the Sport for Good category.
