A child who tragically died after he was struck by a car in an alleged hit-and-run whilst walking to school has been pictured in a sweet tribute. Caleb Wesley, 6, from Victoria, Australia, was heading towards a bus stop with his two older siblings when he was hit by a car at around 8am on Thursday. He sadly passed away at the scene despite being given CPR.
Victoria Police confirmed that the car involved in the crash had left the scene. However, officers tracked down the driver at an address shortly after. She was identified as an 84-year-old woman from Teesdale.
Following the tragedy, Caleb’s school paid an emotional tribute and said he was “always one of the first to show kindness to others”.
Principal Joshua McEwen, of Covenant College, said the community was “devastated” by the news. He described the little boy as “inquisitive, friendly, empathetic and well-loved.”
“He loved learning, loved reading books, and was fascinated by the world around him,” he said. The principal added: “Thank you to all who are praying for Caleb’s family and our school.
Our prayers are also for the many others who have been impacted, including those who witnessed this tragedy, those who assisted at the scene, as well as the driver and her family.
“We don’t know the circumstances that led to this, but we do know that God sees us, and cares for us. We are committed to ongoing support of and care for Caleb’s family and our school community in this difficult time.
“We are so grateful for the support that has been offered by so many including local churches, schools and others. Please keep Caleb’s family, and our school community in your prayers as we journey through this challenging time together.”
The vehicle involved in the collision left the scene, a Victoria Police statement read,. However it was found at a Teesdale address.
“The female driver is assisting police to determine the exact circumstances,” the statement read. Anyone with information has been urged to come forward.
Heartfelt tributes have since poured in from locals on social media following his death. They sent their well-wishes to the family, reports News AU.
One person wrote on Facebook: “I am at work, with tears in my eyes thinking about this poor family and our wonderful community.”
Another commented: “As someone from this small community our hearts are breaking for the boys family, the school and the whole community.”
A third person, who drove past the emergency response, said: “I knew there was a reason my heart felt heavy driving past the first response unit, 2 ambo’s (sic) and a cop car as they were coming through Batesford. Rest In Peace lil man.”
