Luis Duiz is keen to see Mohamed Salah extend his Liverpool contract but says Arne Slot has his dressing room fully focused on the task at hand.
The contracts of Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all ticking down towards their June expiry date. For any Liverpool supporter, the thought of losing even one of them for nothing is a disaster – let alone the prospect of all three walking out the door.
Yet Colombian star Diaz has his eyes firmly set on the present moment as Slot’s Liverpool chase an end-of-season treble. While the possibility of Salah jetting off post-campaign looms, Diaz has stated that he treasures the three years he’s spent with the Egyptian ace.
“I’ve said it before. They are super important for us,” Diaz recently told Telemundo. “It’s up to the club, but hopefully they’ll stay because what they bring to the team is impressive. What they have done, what they have won.
“They don’t settle for little. Mo is a player who is always trying to improve, he is always assisting and scoring, and he’s happy. He’s trying to give his best to the team. Whether they leave on a high note or stay to make history, I’m glad to be sharing these moments with them.”
The 28-year-old was the star of the show in Liverpool’s recent 2-1 triumph over Wolves, scoring his first goal at Anfield since September and winning a penalty for Salah, matching his personal best of 13 goals from last season.
Despite a hiccup in the Merseyside derby that restricted their Premier League lead to seven points and an FA Cup exit at the hands of Plymouth, Diaz remains focused on the team’s efforts.
“We try to focus on ourselves first because we know what’s at stake,” he said. “The manager also looks at each game and training session. We think about the opponent we’re going to face to counteract what they might do. It’s important to stay calm, and keep adding points because there’s still a long way to go.”
Liverpool are set for a Carabao Cup final showdown with Newcastle after dispatching Tottenham with a 4-1 aggregate win in the semi-finals. They’ve also secured a spot in the Champions League last 16 after finishing top of the table in the reformatted competition.
With these achievements, there’s a sense of optimism among the Liverpool faithful and players alike, despite some off-pitch distractions. Diaz is keen to maintain this positive outlook, focusing on the football taking place now, rather than worrying over future issues.
