Luke Littler to fly home from Darts Premier League to attend stadium named after him

Luke Littler will dash home from Dublin on Friday to accept his finest achievement yet – having a stadium named after him.

For one night only, Luke the Nuke’s home-town rugby league club Warrington Wolves will rename their Halliwell Jones fortress after the PDC world champion for their opening Super League home game against Catalan Dragons. And Littler, a genuine rugby league fan, gasped: “It will be my stadium – I just can’t wait.”

Last month, the former boy wonder and Manchester United fan paraded his World Championship trophy on a lap of honour at Old Trafford. United failed to rise to the occasion, losing 2-0 at home to Brighton, but Littler is hoping for better luck when he is thrown to the Wolves – and lands in the VIP seats at the Luke Littler Stadium.

Last weekend he was among Warrington’s 1,700 travelling fans who serenaded him with chants of “There’s only one Luke Littler” as the Wire opened their Super League campaign with a 20-12 win at Huddersfield.

He said: “I’m sure it’ll be a good night. I went to the first game of the season on Sunday and we got the win there. Hopefully I can bring the boys some more luck and we can get another one against Catalan.

“It was just good to get out and be stood with all the crazy lot. I wouldn’t say (it will feel better than Manchester United), but it will probably be one of the biggest atmospheres.

“What do I need to do to make (my) stadium naming rights permanent? Good question – I don’t think it should ever happen, unless it does become a thing in a few years’ time (by winning more world titles). All teams have got sponsorship deals and obviously that’s why it’s named the Halliwell Jones now.”

As Littler, runner-up in the 2024 Sports Personality of the Year poll, continues to stockpile civic honours, he is also to be made a citizen of honour in his home town.

Warrington Borough Council are giving him formal recognition for becoming the youngest darts world champion in history and helping to raise £2 million for Prostate Cancer charities at the last two showpiece tournaments at Alexandra Palace.

He is seeking clarification whether the honour will entitle him to drive a flock of sheep through the town’s Market Gate or let them graze on the Halliwell Jones pitch.

But he added: “I haven’t heard anything official yet, but I’m sure that my social team will get in touch and tell us what is going on.”
