Mark Hamill had an awkward moment on stage at the BAFTAs on Sunday evening.
The Star Wars icon, 73, was getting ready to present the coveted gong for Best Film when he had an awkward wardrobe malfunction at the Royal Festival Hall in London.
As he took to the stage he asked the star-studded audience: “So what makes us love the cinema so much that we’re all gathered here to celebrate tonight?”
But it was then, disaster almost struck as the trousers of his tuxedo appeared to start to fall. Much the professional, Mark carried on as he quickly scurried to pull them back up and tuck himself back in. Thankfully the lectern was in the way – but that seemingly didn’t stop the front row getting an eye full.
An guest who was said to have been amongst the stars in the front row, told The Sun: “Mark started speaking then his suit trousers just dropped to his knees. It was like they were too big for him. All the big stars such as Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Adrien Brody would have seen it from their angle. Most guests looked horrified but said nothing.
The source continued: “They were turning to each other wide-eyed as if to say, did that just happen?”
Mark expertly finished his speech while sorting himself and saying: “For me, it’s that films create worlds so vivid and stories so powerful that we lose ourselves in them completely. They create immersive cinematic landscapes that feel alive whether they are set here in London or anywhere your imagination can take you.”
He went on to announce Conclave as the category winner. Elsewhere on the glitzy annual ceremony there were wins for Mikey Madison and Adrien Brody, who took home the accolades of Best Actor and Actress. When it came to films, Conclave and The Brutalist led the pack with four awards each.
Elsewhere at the ceremony, the BBC has come in for criticism after appearing to cut host David Tennant’s jibe towards Donald Trump.
As he returned for his second stint at the helm of the glitzy event, the former Doctor Who star started the show with an energetic rendition of The Proclaimers’ 1988 anthem I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles).
As he took to reading out his monologue with characteristic flair, he then delved into several hot-button issues, blithely targeting US President Donald Trump while chatting about the period piece The Brutalist.
Tennant highlighted the movie’s “incredible architecture”, cheekily adding, “In fact, it’s the boldest architecture in film this year, apart from Donald Trump’s hair in The Apprentice” – alluding to the biopic featuring Sebastian Stan as the tycoon himself.
Seizing the opportunity for another jest, he carried on: “Talking of villains,” pausing for effect as the laughter rolled on, “We’ve got many this year, not just Nosferatu.”
However, fans online were unhappy and lambasted the editing choice. One Twitter/X comment read: “Come on BBC!!! There were just scripted jokes…. WTF.” (sic)
