Met Office issues urgent snow and ice warnings as freezing rain sparks ‘injury’ alert

Brits have been warned of snow and freezing rain which is set to cause carnage in the coming hours for people.

The Met Office has put out a yellow alert for the wintry conditions, set to arrive in less than 24 hours. It is feared the snow and ice could cause injuries from falls on the icy surfaces, which will also make roads impassable for some.

The alert is in place from 3am tomorrow morning and currently lasts until at least noon, with the possibility of freezing rain falling. It will affect people living in huge swathes of Scotland, including capital Edinburgh, Glasgow and extending north to Aberdeen.

The Met Office warning reads: “Snow flurries will probably turn heavier for a time during Tuesday morning, leading to a covering of snow in some places. Most likely in the 0-1cm range in lowland areas, whilst 1-5cm is possible in places above 200m.

In addition, freezing rain, especially in the southern part of the region, is likely to cause icy surfaces in a few places and could make for difficult driving conditions, even on treated roads. Freezing rain and snow is expected to ease by Tuesday afternoon, with conditions improving.

“Snowy, wintry weather can cause delays and make driving conditions dangerous. Keep yourself and others safe by planning your route, giving yourself extra time for your journey. Check for road closures or delays to public transport and amend plans if necessary.”

People are urged to check road conditions and amend travel plans if necessary. Those who decide to make journeys are urged to ensure essentials are packed in case of delays, including warm clothes, food, water, a blanket, a torch and an ice scraper.

It comes as a 144-hour-long Arctic blast is set to batter the country this month with 10cm of snow per hour, according to new weather maps. Advanced weather modelling maps from WXCharts, which uses MetDesk data, shows parts of the UK turning shades of purple, indicating snowfall.

Snow across parts of central and western Scotland, the North West, central and northern Wales and well as parts of Northern Ireland. On February 27, between 06.cm of snow will be dumped across the Midlands, Wales, Northern England, southern and western Scotland as well as Northern Ireland. Pockets of higher snowfall will be seen in western Scotland and North Yorkshire where between 2cm and 3.5cm is set to fall.
