‘My aunt gifted me DNA test – I watched on as it destroyed my family’

A woman’s entire world came crashing down after her aunt bought her a DNA test as a Christmas present. Excited to learn about her family’s heritage, she completed the test, sent it back to the lab, and waited months for the results to land in her inbox.

But things have never been the same since she read through the email she received. In response to the Reddit thread, ‘What is your horror story from DNA tests like 23andMe?’ the woman, who did not specify what brand of DNA test she used, said: “I found out my dad isn’t my biological father.

“My dad’s sister gave me a DNA test for the holidays. I ended up taking it and discovered I wasn’t related to my aunt, aka not related to my dad.”

In another shocking discovery, she came to learn she has more than 10 half-siblings – and her biological father is actually a sperm donor. She added: “My parents gas lit me for months saying the results were inaccurate, called me a liar to my sister, all this garbage. Then finally admitted it was true after six months of lying. We now have a terrible relationship.”

While most users shared their sympathies for her situation, others believe the auntie planned this all along, believing she deserved to know the truth about her family.

One user said: “Aunt knew and aunt does not like the mum.” Another user added: “That’s how I found my bio father. His wife made everyone in the family test and then when I took the test a couple years later, boom my aunt and father pop up.”

A third user said: “Did your dad love you and did he accept you as his daughter? Or was he a horrible father? I mean maybe his world got crushed and your parents dealt with it in a horrible way, but maybe they just didn’t want to believe that everything they had came falling down.

“The person I would be p***ed at is your aunt, she had no business doing that.” In an update, the woman added: “We didn’t have a good relationship beforehand due to his temper and sexist comments when my sister and I were teenagers, which is when we started to stand up for ourselves.

“I definitely understand why they didn’t tell us; it’s really the lying and gaslighting that ruined our relationship even more. My dad’s brother went through the adoption process (difficult time, his son ended up having an addiction at birth) and I’m 95% sure my dad never told his brother anything about his fertility struggles/that we were conceived with a sperm donor. Suffering alone.”
