Netflix has just added a Margot Robbie thriller that viewers claim is ‘underrated’ to its catalogue.
Originally released in 2015, the R-rated drama stars the Barbie actor alongside Oscar-winning icon Will Smith.
Those looking for a thrilling weekend watch are in for a treat with Focus. The plot follows Nicky (Smith), an experienced con man who takes a novice named Jess (Robbie) under his wing and teaches her the trade.
The pair soon become romantically involved, leading Nicky to cast her aside. However, they reunite years later when Jess has refined her skills. Robbie and Smith are joined by Adrian Martinez (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty), Rodrigo Santoro (300) and Gerald McRaney (This Is Us).
Although the film is led by two beloved actors, it received mixed reviews upon its release. At the time of writing, audiences on IMDB rate the thriller an average of six out of ten stars. Meanwhile, viewers on Rotten Tomatoes score Focus a 53 percent rating, with critics awarding it a more generous 56 percent.
Despite its average ratings, some fans still vouch for the crime caper. One Rotten Tomatoes user raved: “Idk why the rating is so low I loved this movie! And I like to think I am a movie connoisseur… I laughed, I cried, I didn’t predict most of the plot twists and wasn’t upset with the ending at all! Definitely recommend!!”
Another person took to X, formerly Twitter, to share their verdict: “Focus is on Netflix. I love this movie. The chemistry between Will Smith and Margot Robbie is fantastic and still somehow underrated.”
A third moviegoer shared online: “Loved it! If you’re into a “mind boggling” type of movie where the next scene you couldn’t predict even if you tried then you will LOVE this one. I have a problem guessing what’s gonna happen next in a movie and this movie kept me on the edge of my seat at every turn.”
While an IMDB user penned: “Not really sure how this film has got some poor reviews. It was clever, funny and overall kept my focus (Pardon the pun). Will Smith is fantastic in this film, not being an over-exuberant character, which I feel some people were expecting in this film. His on screen relationship with Margot Robbie was very good, and I feel she has not got as much credit for this film as she deserves.”
The leading actors would work together again in the DC Comics 2016 adaptation of Suicide Squad, which similarly received mixed reviews.
Focus is streaming now on Netflix.
