Kate Winslet is all set to make her feature film directorial debut for a Netflix family drama, titled Goodbye June.
As well as directing the film, the Titanic and The Holiday star will also produce the project and act in it also. The movie also stars Toni Collette, Johnny Flynn, Andrea Riseborough, Timothy Spall and Helen Mirren.
Interestingly, Kate’s son Joe Anders, who she shares with ex-husband Sam Mendes, has written the screenplay. Her producer on her last project, biopic Lee, will also be co-producing Goodbye June too.
Netflix has described Goodbye June as “a touching, yet humorous” drama “which sees a fractured group of siblings pull together under sudden and trying circumstances.”
The film will be set in present-day England and production will begin soon across the UK.
After the announcement released, fans have been flocking to Reddit to share their reactions to the new drama. One person expressed: “The cast is stacked: Helen Mirren, Toni Collette, Andrea Riseborough.”
Another Reddit user penned: “Cool, for some reason I thought she already did some directing. Surprised she hasn’t done it sooner.” While a third honestly commented: “Excited for her but I wish it wasn’t for Netflix.”
Kate is coming off of the back of the success of biographical war drama film Lee, in which she starred as the titular character and World War 2 journalist Lee Miller. It received positive reviews from critics and went on to become Sky UK’s highest-grossing original film.
Fans also loved the film and have awarded it a 94% popcorn meter rating on review site Rotten Tomatoes. For her incredible performance in the film, Kate received nominations for Best Actress at the Golden Globe Awards and AACTA International Awards.
Additionally, Lee received a nomination from BAFTA for Oustanding British Film. Kate has been proving she is much more than just an incredible actor, as she makes her directorial debut as well as turning producer for the first time in her career with Lee.
A release date for Goodbye June is yet to be revealed. Lee is available to watch on NOW TV
