Daily US Times, Los Angeles: It was a remarkable moment for both the Academy Award and South Korea. The country’s film Parasite makes history by winning the best picture at this year’s Oscars, becoming the first non-English language film to take the top prize. The movie won a total of four awards.

Most speculated best actor award goes to Joaquin Phoenix, for the movie Joker. Renee Zellweger won the best actress for playing Judy Garland in Judy.

Brad Pitt won the best supporting acting award for his role in Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and Laura Dern won the same award for her role in Marriage Story.

The World War One has been the favorite for the best picture award, but the movie won awards in the technical categories.

A historic night for Parasite

The Oscar night was truly phenomenal for the whole Parasite team as Bong Joon-ho beat Sir Sam to the prize for best director, and also took the best original screenplay award.

The film portrays a vicious social satire about two families from very different classes – one who lives in poverty in a semi-basement, and another rich family residing in a large home.

The film achieved what no other subtitled film has done in the 92-year history of the Academy Awards and won the best picture.

Producer Kwak Sin-ae received the trophy and said “I’m speechless. We never imagined this to happen. I feel like a very opportune moment in history is happening right now.”

He made political comments and attacked the way the impeachment proceedings against US President Donald Trump were handled.

Pitt referred to the fact that Republican senators blocked former National Security Adviser John Bolton to give evidence to the Senate.

“They told me I only have 45 seconds up here, which is 45 seconds more than the Senate gave John Bolton this week,” he said. “I’m thinking maybe Quentin does a movie about it and in the end, the adults do the right thing.”

He then moved to personal, paid tribute to actor Leonardo DiCaprio and remarking that the nomination had made him reflect on his journey to Hollywood superstardom.

Joaquin Phoenix against ‘injustice’

Joaquin Phoenix won the best actor award for his phenomenal role in the film Joker. The actor also used the podium to send a heartfelt message about the state of the world, saying actors have the power to give a “voice for the voiceless”.

He mentioned issues like gender inequality, racism, environment and animal rights.

“I’ve been thinking a lot about some of the distressing issues that we are facing collectively, and at times we are made to feel that we are championing different causes,” the actor said.

“But I see commonality. For me, whether we’re talking about gender inequality, or racism, or queer rights, or indigenous rights, or animal rights, we’re talking about the fight against injustice.”
