Air travel might be quick and easy, but you never know who you’ll end up sitting next to in the cramped quarters of a plane.
From disruptive passengers to crying infants, travellers often have to endure quite a bit during their journey. One passenger was so appalled by what they saw on a flight that they snapped a photo and promptly posted it on Instagram using the hashtag #PassengerShaming.
The image was shared by Instagram user sweeneysaidso, who says they “fly a lot, and take pictures of whatever annoys me or makes me happy”. The offending picture shows a mother trimming her toddler’s toenails right there in their seats, captioned: “Why [is] this lady clipping her toddler’s toenails on the lane? #backofthebus #passengershaming.”
The post quickly drew comments, with one person responding with a sick emoji while another simply wrote: “WTF”. The Passenger Shaming Instagram account is filled with similar photos, showing people doing everything from applying false eyelashes and painting their nails, to a woman using a train tray table as a footrest while she clips her toenails.
One post even claimed a woman was “popping zits” on a man’s nose before she started “pulling nose hairs”, with other strange antics including a woman doing yoga in her seat. This follows a man’s tale of how he got back at a woman who persistently draped her hair over the back of her seat during a flight.
He shared that he was returning from a family holiday, and his daughter was quietly enjoying the Troll movie on the plane when the incident occurred. The woman “decided to put her hair over the back of her seat”, obstructing his daughter’s view of the film.
In a Reddit post, the man detailed: “This obscured the screen for my kid. My daughter asked her to move her hair but she wouldn’t. We pushed the button for the flight attendant and the flight attendant got the woman to move her hair. For about 15 minutes. Then she did it again.”
Unimpressed, the man decided to take action, which made the woman uncomfortable. He went on: “When my daughter went to the bathroom I took her seat. When she came back I let her have my seat. She asked why I moved and I said that I really liked the woman’s hair and I wanted to get a better look at it.
“The woman heard me and she immediately pulled her hair back, tucked it in, and pulled her hoodie up. My daughter didn’t notice. She was happy with her movie. I was happy to have a nap. My wife says that I should just have switched seats and not said anything to make that woman uncomfortable. I think she needed to know that she was being rude.”
