Pete Doherty’s grim diet as he swaps heroin for ‘too much’ cheese and saucisson

Pete Doherty has shared that doctors have warned him he may face the risk of having his toes amputated due to his battle with Type 2 diabetes. The 45-year-old Libertines frontman, who was diagnosed with the condition last year, has been performing from a chair during the final five shows of his European tour.

In a video from his gig in Munich, Germany, Pete provided his fans with a health update. He revealed: “I saw the doctor today and he said you need to stay off your feet as much as you can otherwise you’ll lose your toes.” Those with type 2 diabetes are at higher risk for many related health problems, including foot or leg amputation.

Pete, who had a highly publicised battle with drugs, has given up the ‘main poisons’ to improve his health after his doctor issued a stark warning. Speaking to The Guardian’s Saturday Magazine, he shared: “I gave up the main poisons and my health improved. Then you get told alcohol and cheese and sugar are just as bad and you were healthier when you were on heroin.”

Pete then went on to call himself “a bit of a glutton.” The star said: “It’s not a joke. I’ve been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. And at the moment I’m lacking the discipline to tackle cholesterol.”

But it seems Pete has worked on his lack of discipline after receiving some harsh words from his doctor. The singer previously told the Evening Standard that his doctor had told him he had to change his diet immediately. Pete, who lives in northern France with his wife, Katia, and their daughter Billie-May, said: “I have seen a liver doctor who says I need to change my diet – too much cheese, too much milk. But the cheese is so good, that’s part of the reason I stay here… It’s a cholesterol and diabetes thing now, but there are tablets, it makes a big difference.”

The Babyshambles star previously appeared on BBC’s Louis Theroux Interviews, where he candidly spoke about how his wild lifestyle has severely impacted his health. At one point in the documentary, Pete is seen coughing and clutching his chest in discomfort. He admitted: “You are looking at a very sick man. I’ve battered it, haven’t I, I’ve f***ing caned it. The heroin and the crack… I surrendered to that, and then it was cocaine and the smoking and the alcohol, and now it’s cheese and the saucisson, and the sugar in the tea.”

Pete also shared his doctor’s stark warning about his diet. “It’s all gotta go. They told me a little while ago if you don’t change your diet then you’re gonna have diabetes and cholesterol problems. Death’s lurking, you know what I mean? That’s why I carry that stick.”

In 2021, Pete revealed he had given up drugs and was instead feasting on cheese on toast and relishing long sleep-ins after staying awake for six days straight during his most chaotic years. Speaking about his new lifestyle, he told The Sun: “I like Comté [a type of French cheese], Comté on toast. My guilty pleasure is sleeping.

“For years and years, I would stay up for five or six days and then I would sleep for 24 hours, so now I love sleep. At the moment I’m quite clean. I stopped taking heroin and ketamine.”

He added: “I like experimenting, making cocktails with champagne, a bit of rum, orange juice, I’m coming across like a bit of an alcoholic, but I’m not – I like a nice glass of water.”
