Police called as fight breaks out at Essex comedy gig in response to heckler

Police were called on Saturday evening when a fight broke out at a comedy gig in Southend. A heckler called from the crowd at the end of Paul Chowdhry’s Englandia Tour performance.

A man was reportedly assaulted following the brawl. A video was posted of the scuffle on Paul’s Instagram, with several people seen arguing following the gig at the Cliffs Pavillion on Station Road in Westcliff-on-Sea, Southend.

In the video, posted online, Paul said: “Big fight is broken out after the show. It’s properly kicked off out here this evening. There was some riots here and now some people are probably kicking off tonight.”

In the clip, some audience members were trying to calm others down. Alongside the video, Paul commented: “I want to keep out of harm’s way because I might get jumped,” as he filmed the scenes.

In a statement, a spokesperson from Trafalgar Entertainment, operators of the Cliffs Pavilion, said: “A small number of customers expressed their frustration towards another customer who had been heckling the act throughout the evening.

“Our team responded swiftly to defuse the situation. We take the safety of our audiences, staff and performers very seriously and condemn acts of violence and discrimination in the strongest possible terms.

“We will not hesitate to take action, including liaising with the police, should this be deemed necessary. We would like to remind all our customers to be respectful to each other, to performers and to our staff at future events.”

Essex police were called to the disturbance at approximately 9.35pm that evening. An Essex Police spokesperson told The Mirror: “We were called to a disturbance at Cliffs Pavilion theatre, in Westcliff, at around 9.35pm on Saturday 29 March. It was reported a fight had broken out and a man was assaulted. No serious injuries were reported, officers attended and inquiries are ongoing.”

Paul is on a huge tour across the UK and Ireland, including a date at London’s O2 Arena.

Alongside the post, he shared: “XXXL news! Due to huge demand, extra dates have been added to the Englandia Tour AND I’ve also added MY FIRST EVER TOUR dates in IRELAND renamed Irelandia.”

Paul regularly shares snaps from his tour dates, including a recent one from Guilford. He wrote alongside it: “Here’s a picture of me levitating at G Live in Guildford tonight, in front of a middle-class Surrey audience – with a few people from Slough turning up – who they thought were here to steal their neighbourhood.”
