Daily US Times, Washington: Special prosecutors from President Bill Clinton’s impeachment will be included in US President Donald Trump’s defence team in his Senate trial.
Robert Ray and Alan Dershowitz both investigated Mr Clinton and now will present Mr Trump.
The President’s personal lawyer Jay Sekulow and White House counsel Pat Cipollone will lead the team.
The trial is set to begin next week.
Mr Starr was the US Department of Justice independent counsel in mid-1980s. He investigated the Whitewater affair, a scandal-plagued at that time in Arkansas involving Bill and Hillary Clinton.
The investigation ultimately revealed unrelated evidence that Mr Clinton had been having an affair with a White House intern, Monica Lewinsky.
The investigation had lead to the impeachment of President Clinton in 1998. But he was acquitted by the Senate.
Mr Ray succeeded Mr Starr as the independent counsel.
“This is definitely an ‘are you kidding me?’ kinda day”, Ms Lewinsky tweeted on Friday shortly after Mr Trump’s team was announced.
In 2016, Mr Starr had to leave his position as President of Baylor University after an inquiry found the school had mishandled rape accusations against its football players.
He also resigned from his roles as chancellor and law professor at the university.
Who is Alan Dershowitz?
Mr Dershowitz is a retired Harvard University law professor and constitutional law expert. He previously had celebrity clients included boxer Mike Tyson.
He said he talked with President Trump on Wednesday about the impeachment case.
While talking with the CBS News, he said “I agreed to do it as an independent constitutional scholar. I take no position on the politics – just on the constitution.”
He further said that he was “very, very concerned” about the precedent this impeachment could establish.
Senators sworn in
All one hundred members of US Senate took oath in on Thursday as jurors for the impending impeachment trial of President Donald Trump.
John Roberts, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, administered the oath to the senators to “do impartial justice”.
Trump’s impeachment ball is now in Senate’s court. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sent the articles of impeachment to the Senate. Now Senate will run a trial that will ultimately decide whether Mr Trump should be removed from office or not.
The Senate trial will begin on 21 January.
Justice Roberts asked the senators, “Do you solemnly swear that in all things appertaining to the trial of the impeachment of Donald John Trump, President of the United States, now pending, you will do impartial justice according to the Constitution and the laws, so help you God?”
The lawmakers responded with “I do” before each signing in a book that they took the oath. Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell then adjourned the pre-trial proceedings and announced the trial would begin at 13:00 EST (18:00 GMT) on Tuesday.
