President Trump is set to be acquitted in senate impeachment trial

2 Min Read

Daily US Times, Washington: US President Donald Trump is all set to be acquitted in the Senate impeachment trial. This became clear after senators voted against calling witnesses or admitting new evidence.

Democrats hoped four swing Republicans would vote for witnesses, which would have extended the trial, but only two of the four Republicans voted with Democrats.

The trial now moves to a vote on whether Trump should be acquited, but the result of the vote is certain as it is highly unlikely to go against the President. Trump’s Republican party holds the majority in the Senate.

Republican Party’s senor members pushed from the outset for a speedy trial with no witnesses or new evidence. They did not want former National Security Adviser John Bolton in the Senate impeachment trial

A sneak-peak from John Bolton’s upcoming book leaked to the US media where Mr. Bolton writes that the president directly instructed him to withhold military aid from Ukraine in exchange for dirt on a Democratic political rival, Joe Biden.

President Trump’s defense team in the trial and his party threatened by the potential testimony of Mr. Bolton as it could significantly undermine the trial.

Trump was impeached on two charges- abuse of power and obstructing Congress. Democrats accused Trump that he pressured Ukraine to damage Mr. Biden for his own political benefit. The second impeachment articles were the allegation that he purposefully obstructed the Congressional impeachment investigation.

Trump’s final fate will be decided on February 5, the day senators will vote on whether or not to acquit.

How did senators react?

Democratic senators reacted after the witnesses vote went against the party.

Massachusetts senator and 2020 candidate Elizabeth Warren tweets ”Senate Republicans just failed the American people & broke their oath to the United States Constitution.”

“I’ve never heard of a trial where you don’t have witnesses. This is a sad day in American history”, tweets Vermont senator Bernie Sanders, also running for 2020.

Another Democratic candidate for this year’s election Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota wrote: “If you don’t have witnesses, you do not have a fair trial. The truth will come out.”
